Mr. Putnam talked about his book [Bowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of American

Community], published by Simon and Schuster. The book is based on an essay published in

the Journal of Democracy that drew parallels between the decline in social membership

organizations such as bowling leagues and fraternal lodges, and the decline in voter

participation and civic engagement. A panel discussion followed Mr. Putnam’s speech.
