The speakers gave their impressions of the status of Arab-Americans during the hostilities against Iraq. The representatives strove to reassure their Arab-American constituents that their civil rights would be respected and protected to the fullest extent of the law. Interviews with foreign nationals were being considered by the FBI in order to decrease the possibility of terrorist activity within the U.S. Unfortunately, internal terrorist activities, usually labelled hate crimes, have occurred against Arab-Americans and Arab-American organizations. Ms. Chung and Ms. Golub warned against utilizing unwarranted police intervention in investigating specific ethnic groups, recalling the blatant civil rights violations of Japanese Americans in internment camps during World War Two. close
