Novelist Ernest Gaines tallked about his most recent book A Lesson Before Dying, published by Vintage. This novel won the 1993 National Book Critics Circle Award and Mr. Gaines has also been awarded a MacArthur Foundation grant for writings of “rare historical resonance.” The author read passages from the book, commenting on the thought processes he had when writing them and about his love of writing. He answered questions submitted by members of the audience, including how he feels about the death penalty and how he got started writing. close
