Mr. Bryan and Mr. Lankford talked about the book they co-edited, Robert Knox Sneden’s Eye of the Storm: A Civil War Odyssey, published by Free Press. Union private and mapmaker Sneden left a five-thousand page diary and nearly 1000 watercolor illustrations of his eyewitness accounts of some of the most famous battles of the Civil War. Mr. Kelly told how the materials came to be acquired by the Virginia Historical Society. Mr. Bryan spoke about Sneden’s background and years of fighting. Mr. Lankford spoke about Sneden as a prisoner of war and his postwar years. The discussion was supplemented with slides of Sneden’s illustrations. After their remarks the panel answered questions from the audience. close
