In a forum marking the 200th anniversary of the White House a panel looked at the White House in the early 20th Century. Professor Garry Wills spoke of the stagecraft of power. Lydia Tederick presented photographs from the turn of the century. John Gable spoke about how President Theodore Roosevelt remade the presidency and the White House. Roosevelt actually had the name of the residence changed from Executive Mansion to White House. Professor Allida Black spoke about the attitudes that Eleanor Roosevelt took to the White House and how that shaped the Roosevelts and how their legacy shaped those who followed them into the White House. The panel members answered questions from the audience. close
