Lynne Duke discussed her book "Mandela, Mobutu, and Me: A Newswoman’s African Journey", published by Doubleday. The book is memoir of Ms. Duke’s four-year assignment as the Washington Post’s Johannesburg, South Africa bureau chief. She described covering events such as the war in Angola, Rwanda after the genocide, post-apartheid South Africa, and the continent-wide AIDS epidemic. She shared her impressions of Nelson Mandela, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Mobutu Sese Seko of the former Zaire and his successor, Laurent Kabila. She also chronicles the experiences of nurses attempting to treat superstitious villagers stricken with AIDS, and her conversations with tribal leaders, activists, refugees from war zones, and township women. After her remarks, Ms. Duke answered questions from members of the audience. close
