Mr. Viroli talked about his book Niccolo’s Smile: A Biography of Machiavelli, published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. Mr. Viroli’s biography follows the life and the work of the founder of modern political thought from his ascent in Florence’s diplomatic corps, to his imprisonment and exile, to the composition of his most important works. Mr. Viroli contends that Machiavelli was an honest diplomat, whose “cynicism” was a reaction to the corruption in Renaissance Italy. He talked about the influence of Machiavelli on Western history, the times in which he lived, and Florentine culture. close
