Professor Porter discussed and read from his book The Creation of the Modern World: The Untold Story of the British Enlightenment, published by W.W. Norton and Company. The Enlightenment period, which delivered an outburst of political, philosophical, intellectual, scientific and social innovation is mostly linked to continental Europe. The author set out to answer the question “Why is it that historians do not recognize, acknowledge and celebrate the English enlightenment?” He talks about the great minds of 18th Century England including, John Locke, Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, Daniel Defoe, Alexander Pope, Mary Wollstonecraft and Joseph Addison. After his remarks he answered questions from members of the audience. close
