Mr. Baker testified before the committee on the foreign affairs funding proposals for fiscal year 1992. In considering the possibilities for a “new world order” following the Persian Gulf war, Baker discussed the difficulties developing between the United States and King Hussein of Jordan. King Hussein spoke February 6 via television to his subjects on the Persian Gulf war, and stated the coalition forces' attacks were directed “toward all Muslims, not against Iraq alone.” Mr. Baker said the administration was reviewing all military and economic assistance to Jordan as a result of King Hussein’s increasing support of Iraq. However, Baker said the U.S. would not sever ties with King Hussein, because the alternatives to King Hussein seem even less beneficial to American interests. close
