The panelists discussed how the conservative coalition can help the situation in El Salvador in fighting the “Marxist guerrillas.” The country has been under armed conflict since 1979. They spoke of the challenge to building a democracy in the country, but stressed that there are common elements around which a negotiated settle could be reached, but has not been. El Salvador’s situation is likened to the defense of liberty in the Persian Gulf. The history of the conflict is explained, as is the role of the United Nations. close
