Ms. Allen moderated a panel discussion on global health issues. Dr. Nuland wrote The Mysteries Within: A Surgeon Reflects on Medical Myths. published by Simon and Schuster. He spoke on how doctors have viewed disease through the ages and the ancient debate over whether a physician’s only responsibility was to an individual patient or to a wider society. Dr. Le Fanu wrote The Rise and Fall of Modern Medicine, published by Carroll and Graf. He spoke about two crises in global health where most people don’t have enough money to spend on health care but in western society too much money is spent on the last months of life. He focused on the escalation in health care costs in the western world. Dr. Rufin wrote The Siege of Isfahan, published by W.W. Norton and Company. The book is an historical novel about medicine. He spoke of aberrations in the expected rates of mortality and fecundity and of demographic control. After their remarks the panelists answered questions from members of the audience. close
