The 2001 Bancroft Prizes were awarded for books of exceptional merit and distinction in the fields of American history and biography published in 2000.

The recipients, who made acceptance speeches, were: Mr. Bellesiles for Arming America: The Origins of a National Gun Culture, published by Knopf ; Ms. Johnson for Roaring Camp: The Social World of the California Gold Rush, published by W.W. Norton and Co.; and Mr. Nasaw for The Chief: The Life of William Randolph Hearst, published by Houghton Mifflin. close
