President George H. W. Bush spoke to reporters at the White House after he and his cabinet were briefed by Secretary of Defense Dick Cheney and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Colin Powell on the current situation of the U.S. armed forces in the Persian Gulf war. Secretary Cheney and General Powell have been on a tour of the U.S. military installations in the Middle East to assess the progress of the Persian Gulf war for President Bush. Mr. Bush announced the air attacks upon Iraq and Iraqi forces in Kuwait would continue for an unspecified amount of time. The entrance of ground troops into the war would be thus delayed, but Mr. Bush would not put dates on when the air operation would cease and a combined air-ground operation would begin. Mr. Bush expressed confidence in the U.S. military leaders and armed forces fighting the war, said the safety of the troops was of primary concern, and military operations conducted by the U.S. continued without targeting of civilians.
