Lt. Gen. Thomas Kelly, Director for Operations, Joint Stff, Capt. David Herrington, Director of Current Intelligence, Joint Staff, and Pete Williams, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs, spoke to reporters on current events in the Persian Gulf war. Lt. Gen. Kelly gave the statistics on the war, including casualties, sorties, aircraft losses, etc. Admiral Herrington discussed the U.S. military’s reasons for targeting and bombing what they claimed was a military command and control center. Iraq claims the target was an air raid bunker; the bombing resulted in hundreds of Iraqi casualties. Adm. Herrington said the U.S. had evidence that the “bunker” was a military facility, and the presence of civilians in the bunker was not detected at the time of the bombing. close
