Cass Sunstein gave a speech entitled “Democracy, the Internet, and the 2000 Election” and discussed his book Republic.com, published by Princeton University Press. Mr. Sunstein believes the isolation of cyberspace has the potential to fragment the shared aspects of American culture. He asserts that democracy depends on shared experiences and the ability to customize the information downloaded from the Internet will inhibit the exchange of ideas and opinions as people are exposed only to the information that they want and views that they already hold. After his presentation, he answered questions from members of the audience. close
