Professor Etzioni talked about his book The Monochrome Society, published by New Forum Books, that describes ethnic commonalities and differences in the United States. He argued that American ethnic groups have far more in common than they have differences; however, differences are more widely reported. He noted the tendency to lump groups together assuming certain political persuasions based on skin color. He asked the question, “What is race?” and discussed the blurry line of a dominant ethnicity in persons with a multi-ethnic background. Dr. Etzioni also highlighted certain statistics and the 2000 Census. He answered questions from a student audience at the end of the program. close
