Author Simon Winchester talked about his book, The Map That Changed the World: William Smith and the Birth of Modern Geology, published by HarperCollins. The book is the story of the first man to document the distinct layering patterns of rocks and fossils. The author described how William Smith concluded that because each layer contained particular substances found only within that layer, they must represent developmental stages in geology and then used this knowledge to develop the first map of the layers of Earth beneath England.
