Professor Mark Juergensmeyer, whose scholarship focuses on the sociology of religion, religious nationalism, terrorism, and moral community, discussed his latest book, Terror in the Mind of God: The Global Rise of Religious Violence, published by University of California Press. In light of recent events, he talked about how religion has formed the new moral basis for politics and the taking up of arms, describing the rise of the Taliban as an effect of the collapse in faith in secular religion and the rise in new forms of religious nationalism. In his analysis of the culture of terrorism, he also explored the September 11th acts of terrorism as symbolic rather than strategic attacks. After his presentation he answered audience questions. close
