Rep. Foley and Sen. Mitchell spoke to reporters in the Pentagon after being briefed by Pentagon military advisers on the status of the ground campaign in the Persian Gulf war. Sen. Mitchell mentioned the Iraqi SCUD missile attack on a U.S. military bunker in Saudi Arabia during the early hours of the ground campaign which resulted in 12 casualties, all U.S. military personnel. He also said the dissent among Democrats in Congress over giving the president the authority to use force in the Persian Gulf crisis does not show the Democrats to be weak on defense or foreign policy. The Democrats, he said, fully supported the position that Iraq must leave Kuwait; the debate was over when and how the operation should be carried out with minimal loss of life. Rep. Foley spoke on the ground operation itself, saying the Iraqi SCUD missile that landed on the U.S. military bunker had been intercepted in flight and only pieces of the intercepted SCUD fell to earth. Other senators and representatives who had been in the briefing spoke to reporters on elements of the ground campaign, being careful not to release information on the campaign itself in the interest of national security. close
