Mr. Goldstein talked about his book, Desperate Hours: The Epic Rescue of the Andrea Doria, published by John Wiley and Sons. He described the 1956 shipwreck of the Andrea Doria, one of the most famous disasters in maritime history. The Italian luxury liner was built at a cost of $29 million dollars, was 697 feet in length, weighed 29,100 gross tons and was considered to be one of the most beautiful and unsinkable ocean vessels ever. Mr. Goldstein retold the stories of the passengers and their rescuers, and described the missteps and miscalculations that led to the collision with the Swedish liner Stockholm off the coast of Nantucket Island. Retired Coast Guard Lieutenant Commander Boggs also gave a first-hand account of the collision damage and the eventual sinking of the Andrea Doria. close
