Professor Edgar discussed his book, Partisans and Redcoats: The Southern Conflict that Turned the Tide of the American Revolution, published by William Morrow. He described many of the little-known events that took place in South Carolina between the years of 1775 and 1782. For instance, upon capturing Charleston in 1780, Lord Cornwallis, the British commander, tried to intimidate the population with extreme measures including the massacring of civilians in the Carolina backcountry. Professor Edgar believes that the Revolutionary War was a Civil War as well. Many South Carolinians remained loyal to the king and joined the Tory militia. It was not uncommon for family members to fight against each other in battle. In addition to recounting famous battles and key historical figures, Professor Edgar related the efforts of women, children, disabled and minority patriots during the British occupation.
