Mr. Schultheis recounts his experiences as a journalist during the Afghan civil war in his book Night Letters: Inside Wartime Afghanistan, published by The Lyons Press. He described the country as virtually unchanged for the past five hundred years. The country became enmeshed in a civil war between a Soviet-backed Communist government and the Muslim rebels, the mujahedin. Throughout the 1980s, Mr. Schultheis reported on the war from the front lines for several U.S. newspapers. The author read excerpts from his book and answered questions from the audience. He also expressed his opinion of media coverage of current events in Afghanistan. close
