Within the next week President Bush is expected to announce whether or not he will impose tariffs on steel imports. Mr. Gerard, who was in Washington for a steel industry rally, said the United Steelworkers want the president to apply a 40 percent tariff to imported steel because of illegal imports and undercut prices that have forced many steel plants into bankruptcy recently. He responded to audience telephone calls, faxes and electronic mail. close
