Authors Samantha Power and Elizabeth Neuffer examined the history of American response to genocidal warfare. Ms. Power is the author of A Problem from Hell: America and the Age of Genocide, published by Basic Books. Ms. Power’s book raises questions about the United States' failure to stop genocide after vowing to prevent further occurrences after the Holocaust. Her book is based on interviews and classified documents, and includes examples of twentieth-century incidents of genocide. Ms. Neuffer’s book, The Key to My Neighbor’s House: Seeking Justice in Bosnia and Rwanda, published by Picador, explores the extent to which genocide erodes a nation’s social and political environment in addition to destroying the lives of the perceived enemies. The book is based on interviews with victims, war orphans, Serbian militiamen and NATO commanders, among others. Jacqueline Bhabha of the University Committee on Human Rights Studies at Harvard University moderated the event. close
