Professor Childers discusses his book In the Shadows of War: An American Pilot’s Odyssey Through Occupied France and the Camps of Nazi Germany, published by Henry Holt and Company. It’s the story of Roy Allen, an American bomber pilot who was shot down over France during World War II. Allen was sheltered in a girls' school by a young French schoolteacher, Colette Florin, who was also hiding a leader of the local resistance movement, Pierre Mulsant. A friendship developed between the three, but eventually Allen attempted to return to the United States. He was captured by the Gestapo and taken to the concentration camp of Buchenwald to await his fate when Allied troops liberated the camp. Professor Childers used military archives, private papers, interviews, memoirs and firsthand accounts in recreating the events of this true story. During his presentation, he reads excerpts from the book and answers questions from members of the audience. close
