The committee heard testimony on the confirmation of Edward Madigan to the position of Secretary of the Department of Agriculture. Rep. Madigan, formerly a Republican House member and ranking member of the House Agriculture committee, was nominated to replace Clayton Yeutter resigned to take the chair of the national Republican committee. Senators Simon, Symms and Dixon and Reps. de la Garza and Coleman spoke in favor of Rep. Madigan’s confirmation. Rep. Madigan stated his priorities and concerns in agriculture policies, and responded to questions from the committee on his record as ranking member of the House Agriculture committee. On Thursday, March 7, 1991, the Senate voted 99 to 0 to confirm Rep. Madigan as Secretary of Agriculture. close
