Republican congressional leaders spoke to reporters in the driveway of the White House after meeting with President Bush on the nation’s domestic issues. Rep. Michel discussed the issues brought forth in the meeting, including President Bush’s policies in education, crime, budget spending caps, transportation, energy, the federal death penalty and a civil rights bill. Rep. Michel said he felt the president’s popularity would not necessarily translate into votes for his domestic policy. Sen. Gramm related the president’s resolution in the Persian Gulf with the president’s resolution to pass his domestic legislation. close
