This was a session on public policy issues that affect the book industry. Sen. Hatch advised booksellers on small business issues and getting involved politically to advocate for their interests. He also talked about his new book, Square Peg, which will be published by Basic Books in November 2002. Two bookseller/politicians also spoke: Mr. Coonerty, owner of Bookshop Santa Cruz, who was Mayor of Santa Cruz, California from 1992 to 1993; and Mr. Howorth, owner of Square Books, who is currently Mayor of Oxford, Mississippi. They both talked about how they got involved in local politics and how their involvement has affected their stores. The session was moderated by Mr. Teicher, Chief Operating Officer of the American Booksellers Association. close
