Philip Gerard discussed his latest book, Secret Soldiers: The Story of World War II’s Heroic Army of Deception, published by Dutton. In it, Mr. Gerard writes about a once top-secret elite Army unit that used the tools of deception to save lives during World War II. He maintains that these men were not average soldiers. Their ranks included men such as designer Bill Blass, painter Ellsworth Kelly and a number of artists, engineers and musicians. Mr. Gerard outlines their mission as two-fold: to deceive the German Army into believing that the Allies possessed more troops than they actually did, and to draw enemy fire on their position in order to allow Allied troops to advance. There was a brief question-and-answer session following his presentation. close
