Author Charlotte Twight discussed her book, Dependent on D.C.: The Rise of Federal Control over the Lives of Ordinary Americans, published by Palgrave. According to her, the shift from personal autonomy to dependence on government is the defining characteristic of twentieth century American politics. It is Professor Twight’s contention, however, that Americans have been duped into giving up their autonomy. The book chronicles the methods, including Social Security, income tax withholding, and federally funded education, Professor Twight feels politicians have used to shift power away from the public. James Pinkerton, a columnist with Newsday, provided commentary on Professor Twight’s assertions and Tom Palmer, Senior Fellow with the Cato Institute, moderated the event. A question and answer period followed the remarks by Professor Twight and Mr. Pinkerton. close
