Sen. Robb talked about the vital purpose of county government. He said that running a county these days seems as difficult as running the country of Iraq because it may feel like the entire weight of the United States federal government is being used to make the county administrators' lives more difficult and less predictable. He talked about the budget process on the federal and local government levels. Ambassador Hills spoke about the opening of markets and expanding trade for the United States. She said that “trade must matter to counties” because expanded markets provide higher wages, lower prices, greater consumer choice, and more jobs. She said, “Liberal trade means a better standard of living for all Americans.” close
