Ms. Tutwiler spoke to reporters at the State Department about the concerns and activities of the Department of State, including the activities of Secretary of State Baker. The Secretary of State had been working with Middle Eastern diplomats on “points of convergence,” or possibilities for a peace settlement. She announced further reports of fighting between rebel forces and the Iraqi government, but could not confirm either Iraqi or rebel advances in the fighting. Ms. Tutwiler said the U.S. supported the territorial integrity of Iraq. Ms. Tutwiler also announced a military coup which had taken place the previous evening in Mali. The media, airports and government of Mali are under the control of the military, and the U.S. urged the opposition party in control of Mali to move toward a democratic system of government. None of the 600 Americans in Mali were harmed, and no American property had been seized in the coup. Whether the coup was actually a move toward democracy was not determin close
