Author David Goldfield discussed his newest book, Still Fighting the Civil War: The American South and Southern History, published by Louisiana State University Press. In it, the author makes the case that the American South still has major problems regarding racial equality. The author cites historical examples like Booker T. Washington’s call to Southern blacks to submit to segregation in order to gain educational opportunities, as well as modern examples like Todd County, Kentucky’s Miss Confederacy pageant. Mr. Goldfield writes to prove that a more equal American South is possible, although the many sides involved have different ideas about how to get there. After the presentation the author answered questions from members of the audience. close
