Republican party members Ms. Chavez and Senator Hatch discussed their respective political memoirs titled, An Unlikely Conservative: The Transformation of An Ex-Liberal and Square Peg: Confessions of a Citizen Senator, both published by Basic Books. Ms. Chavez’s biography tells about her transformation from a liberal Democrat to a conservative Republican, which she says was caused both by her disapproval of Affirmative Action programs and her desire to encourage Mexican immigrants to learn the English language. Senator Hatch spoke about his desire to write a book that would help people understand how the legislative branch of the government worked. In his book, he tells stories about his experiences as a freshman senator and what decisions he wishes he would have made differently. Following their presentations, both speakers answered questions from members of the audience. close
