Both Mr. Stern and former Representative Heftel talked about the need for congressional campaign finance reform. Mr. Stern also announced his decision to no longer support legislative term limits, saying that limiting the term only attacks the symptom, not the root cause. They said that the reforms need to occur from without, not within the system. Mr. Lonsdale talked about the power of the incumbent when running for Congress. He said that incumbents have it all going for them. The challengers have “virtually nothing going for us but our principles and our energy.” Money and PAC support, he said, are the “mother’s milk of politics.” Mr. Lonsdale received 46 percent of the vote in his 1990 congressional race. Mr. Gargan is a citizen activist who said that unless comprehensive changes are made in the electoral process, our country is going to crumble. He showed an advertisement about the “Keating 5” which he is personally running in a major national news magazine. Members of the audience were invited to give brief remarks after Stern, Heftel and Lonsdale spoke. close
