Defense Industry Award

Gen. Powell spoke before a dinner meeting of the American Defense Preparedness Association, an organization created to link the U.S. government, the U.S. military and private defense industries to expedite coordination between the three areas in U.S. military operations. He received the Defense Industry award for his contributions to the Persian Gulf war. In his remarks, Gen. Powell thanked the American Defense Preparedness Association on behalf of the U.S. troops in the Middle East. He went on to laud the manufacturers of U.S. armaments and equipment for their effective and efficient contributions to the U.S. troops. He stated that although the Persian Gulf war was over, international tensions continued in the Middle East and around the world, and the U.S. needed to remain prepared to respond to regional conflicts to protect U.S. interests. close
