The briefing was to help educate the press on the terminology and technological progress of the solid waste management field. Terms such as recycle, pre-cycle, and degradability need to be understood because their use influences people’s thinking. The panelists said it was important for the public and politicians to understand the true trade-offs in waste management. How communities and states can handle waste was discussed as well as the “Not-In-My-Backyard Syndrome.” Plans for integrated waste management were explained. They discussed priorities affecting product design and marketing, and the economic and environmental factors which affect each decision making stage of a product’s life. close
