America and the Courts featured two presentations by Chief Justice William Rehnquist. The first was a speech on judicial independence from March 21st at the University of Richmond in Richmond, Virginia, and the second was a reading of war letters at the Library of Congress from last year.

In May 2002, the Library of Congress marked the publication of War Letters, a book of two hundred letters from every major U.S. war since the Civil War. Chief Justice Rehnquist read war letters by former Supreme Court Justice and Civil War veteran Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. Justice Holmes served on the United States Supreme Court from 1902 to 1932. close
