Professor Todd Gitlin discussed his book Letters to a Young Activist: The Art of Mentoring, published by Basic Books. Writing in the form of a personal letter, Professor Gitlin looks back on his experiences in the 1960s to provide guidance for budding idealists. According to Professor Gitlin, the book is intended as encouragement and a cautionary message for current-day activists. He explains the need for both outside activists and “whistle-blowers” in making changes in public policy. In addition, he offers several principles that have influenced his own political actions, including commitment, historical perspective and idealism tempered by pragmatism. Following his presentation, Professor Gitlin answered questions from members of the audience. close
