Mr. Goldman discussed his book The Piratization of Russia: Russian Reform Goes Awry, published by Routledge. He described the Russian economy’s structure, examined reasons for its collapse in 1998 and its recovery in 1999. The book also examines the Russian oil industry and the oligarchs who control it, their uses of illegal means to obtain control of it, and the emergence of a small group of Russians who claimed valuable natural resource deposits after the country’s collapse. The author argued against the common belief that President Yeltsin’s economic course was the only course open to Russia. After his presentation Mr. Goldman answered questions from members of the audience. close
