President George H.W. Bush spoke to reporters on the South Lawn of the White House to discuss the significance of the ceremonial tree-planting in observance of Arbor Day. Following the ceremony, President Bush responded to reporters' questions on a number of issues. He said White House chief of staff John Sununu had his full confidence despite charges that Mr. Sununu used government planes for private non-work-related trips. He also repeated his stand on Iraq, saying he did not want to involve U.S. troops in the ongoing conflict between the Kurds and the Iraqi government. close
