The report states that the total prison population in the United States was approximately 2.2 million people. Around half the prisoners were incarcerated for violent offenses, twenty percent for drug-related offenses, twenty percent for property crimes, and ten percent for public order crimes. Approximately seven percent were women. The report shows that while there was a decrease in the national crime rate, the number of inmates in prisons had increased, and the majority of prisoners were repeat offenders. Mr. Greenfield responded to audience telephone calls.
