The committee continued to hear testimony on the state of America’s education system, focusing specifically on the effect of schools and education on students and their families. These hearings came approximately two weeks after President Bush announced a new program for American education. The administration’s program contained several new initiatives, including nationwide skills testing of students, parental choice for their children’s schools, improved standards for math and science education, and the use of Federal money for students attending parochial and private schools. Witnesses included school administrators and teachers who testified on their experiences with the nation’s educational system and gave specific proposals on ways to improve it, such as increased parental involvement in their child’s education and increased pay for teachers. close
