After an introduction by Mr. DeMuth, former U.S. solicitor general Robert Bork talked about his latest book, Coercing Virtue: The Worldwide Rule of Judges, published by American Enterprise Institute Press. In the book, Mr. Bork asserts that many courts in democratic nations around the world behave in an imperialistic, or “Olympian", manner, which almost always advances a liberal political and cultural agenda. Mr. Bork contends that this "judicial activism” encroaches on the domains of the executive and legislative branches of government, undermines popular sovereignty, and ultimately threatens democracy. Mr. Bork said that American, Canadian, and Israeli courts were some of the worst offenders. He also discussed the internationalization of law and responded to questions from the audience. close
