National Public Radio Correspondent Anne Garrels talked about her memoir Naked in Baghdad: The Iraq war as seen by NPR’s correspondent, published by Farrar, Straus, and Giroux. Ms. Garrels was one of only sixteen non-embedded American journalists who stayed in Baghdad’s Palestine Hotel during the 2003 American military drive into Iraq. The narrative begins in October 2002 with several trips the author made to Baghdad, and then goes on to detail her daily experiences during the coalition’s offensive. Ms. Garrels also describes her relationship with her Iraqi driver, Amer. He was able to provide her with unprecedented access to the people of Baghdad. Following her presentation, the author responded to questions from the audience. close
