Journalist Aidan Hartley talked about his book, The Zanzibar Chest: A Story of Life, Love, and Death in Foreign Lands, published by Atlantic Monthly Press. He described his time as a Reuters correspondent covering Ethiopia, Somalia and Rwanda during the late 1980s and early 1990s. He also talked about the legacy of four generations of Mr. Hartley’s family of colonialists. Finally, after having witnessed the events in Rwanda, the journalist returned to his family home in Kenya to bury his father. There, he found the diary of his father’s best friend, Peter Davey. Mr. Hartley then traveled to the Arabian Peninsula to investigate Davey’s mysterious death fifty years earlier. Following prepared remarks, the author responded to questions from the audience. close
