The 50th annual Red Mass was held at St. Matthew’s Cathedral. The Roman Catholic Mass is held annually to pray for Supreme Court justices, judges, and government officials. Among the attendees were Chief Justice William Rehnquist; Justice Antonin Scalia; Housing and Urban Development Secretary Mel Martinez; Washington, D.C. Mayor Anthony Williams; and Maryland’s Lieutenant Governor, Michael Steele. Cardinal Theodore McCarrick led the liturgy, which was not shown. The homily was delivered by Cardinal Avery Dulles, the son of former U.S. Secretary of State John Foster Dulles. He was interviewed about the preparation of the homily. During the homily exterior scenes and still pictures were shown. close
