Professor McPherson talked about the Civil War, the causes of secession and the reasons for the Union’s victory. Winner of the 1988 Pulitzer Prize for History, his book Battle Cry of Freedom was acknowledged to be the definitive account of the Civil War. He talked about the recently released new edition, titled The Illustrated Battle Cry of Freedom: The Civil War Era, published by Oxford University Press, which eliminated the footnotes and edited out a fifth of the text, providing room for color maps of major battles and campaigns, photographs, cartoons and artist’s depictions from the period. There was not a question and answer period. close
