Victor Davis Hanson talked about his book, Ripples of Battle: How Wars of the Past Still Determine How We Fight, How We Live, and How We Think, published by Doubleday. The book examined the lasting impressions of war on families, society, and future military thinking through an analysis of three battles: Okinawa, fought between the United States and Japan in 1945; Shiloh, between Union and Confederate forces in the U.S. Civil War in 1862; and Delium, fought between the Athenians and the Boeotians during the Peloponnesian War in 424 B.C. During his talk, Professor Hanson gave a brief review of the battles of Okinawa and Delium, and talked about the battle of Shiloh in detail. He also talked specifically about Civil War commanders William T. Sherman, Albert Johnson, Lewis Wallace, and Nathan Bedford Forrest. Following prepared remarks, the author responded to questions from the audience. close
