Sharon Pratt Dixon, first-term mayor of Washington, DC, and alumnus of Howard University delivered the commencement address to the 1991 graduates of Howard University in Washington, DC. Following the student speaker, a hymn, and the awarding of the honorary degrees, Ms. Dixon was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree. In her commencement address, Ms. Dixon discussed several issues relating to minorities' status in the U.S. She called for African-Americans to claim their equal portion of political and economic power in America and said blacks have made greater strides in political and economic power than any other ethnic group in history. She told the class of 1991 to educate all African-Americans to take their rightful place in the expanding economic marketplace. close
